People often ask me how I would save the publishing and news industries. I always say the same thing – create a relationship with me… Put another way, be a life resource, not a news one

This neatly chimes with my ethnographic observations (PDF) on the challenge of participation for news organisations:

I began to see the underlying problem as contrasting flows of information. The news cycle around event peaks and
controversies – and how citizens (i.e. commenters) understand subjects – as ‘news’ but also as sustained interest areas, daily life choices or even ongoing activism
