Just came across the WP Greet Box WordPress Plugin on Jozef’s blog. It does something simple, useful and dare I say elegant: picking up where a user was referred from – and creating a message accordingly.
This gives a chance to personalise the experience for the user, thus making them feel a little special, even if nothing more is known about them than where they were last. It’s an automated indication that they are recognised, understood and are being treated accordingly.
Although the notice might be a little lost on complex sites with multiple calls to action – for a blog it works well. Furthermore – the way the plugin prompts twitter and digg referees to tweet or digg the post depending on their last destination is an excellent prompt for a user to spread the word. Member communities can take this principle a step further – using a message for any repeat visits after the initial referral to prompt new visitors to sign-up.
